More than 80 percent of eligible dealers are enrolled in dealership update program

DETROIT – Buick and GMC customers nationwide are discovering how a more welcoming dealership atmosphere enhances the experience of buying a new car or servicing a vehicle. More than 1,900 dealers, many in major markets, are showing the way.

The ongoing dealership image enhancement program includes a new exterior façade with updated signage, a bright and airy showroom featuring a customer greeting station, and a customer lounge with free Wi-Fi. In some cases, a café or salon is part of the experience.

The changes are important because both Buick and GMC currently attract more than 40 percent of their buyers from brands outside General Motors.

Gensler, a leading global architecture firm, is helping Buick and GMC marry the new design details with each dealership’s existing building.

Paul Masse, owner of two Buick-GMC stores in New England, has completed one dealership update in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, and is in the process of revitalizing another store in Woonsocket.

“The design group from Gensler did a great job with the colors and appearance,” Masse said. “It really does bring in a new type of customer.”

And Masse’s customers are noticing the differences.

“This new store provides such a comfortable place to buy and service a vehicle,” said Crystal Montgomery of East Providence. “This dealership takes quality to a whole new level.”

To date, more than 170 dealers have completed the image enhancement program. Combined with the number of stores at various points in the process, 1,900 Buick and GMC dealers are involved. By the end of 2013, more than 2,000 buildings across the United States will be fully revitalized.

Buick eAssist Smartphone App Makes A Game Out Of Saving Fuel

Want to get the next generation of drivers thinking green, long before they get behind the wheel?
Buick has come up with an innovative and fun app for Android and iPhone platforms that carefully blends entertainment with education. It bundles three games into one app, called Buick Fuel Efficiency Games.

Players learn about concepts like regenerative braking, aerodynamics and even Buick’s eAssist mild hybrid system, which provides supplemental electric power to boost acceleration without using additional fuel.

“Regeneration Road,” one of the three games included, has players focus on regenerative braking to increase battery charge. The goal of the game is to reach your destination with as much gasoline remaining in the tank as possible.

“Roll and Boost” gives players a simple understanding of how the eAssist mild hybrid system adds power and helps increase fuel economy. Players get a single tank of fuel, and the object of the game is to make that tank last as many miles as possible.

GM shows how interactive car windows could be fun for passengers

How do you fight boredom if you're stuck in the back seat during a long road trip? Surf the Web on your smart phone? Stare at the scenery and wonder what you're whizzing by? Researchers at General Motors, along with students at the Future Lab at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Israel, think there are ways to merge the two.

GM's Windows of Opportunity (WOO) Project asked the Israeli students to "conceptualize new ways to help rear seat passengers, particularly children, have a richer experience on the road." And what they came up with is quite stunning.

Using existing—albeit expensive—technology, the futurists created a prototype entertainment and information system that uses touch- and gesture-sensitive rear door windows. The system ties into the car's information systems—speed and location via GPS, for example—and the wireless Web. Four experimental "apps" displayed on the special window keep the back seat passenger entertained and informed.

According to the press release, the apps include:

Otto, an animated character projected over passing scenery that responds to real-time car performance, weather, and landscape. With Otto, passengers can learn about their environment in fun, playful ways.
Foofu, which allows passengers to create and explore by drawing on the window with a finger.
Spindow, a social media like app that connects riders with others passengers around the globe in real time.
Pond, an app that allows passengers to stream and share music with other cars on the road, download favorite tracks, and share messages with other passengers on the road.

The Bezalel Academy students demonstrate the prototype system in a video (see below), but there are no immediate plans to put such interactive displays in production vehicles, said GM's press release.

GMC Wraps Up Monday Night Football Tour

DETROIT – GMC, together with the NFL, completed its second annual Monday Night Football Tour, with NFL cities reaping the benefits of more than 300 volunteers who built playgrounds as part of United Way’s nationwide effort to get 1.9 million more kids active and healthy by 2018.

Playgrounds were completed in Dallas, Tampa Bay, Detroit, New York City, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Boston, New Orleans and Seattle. Volunteers, including NFL players like Detroit Lions’ tight end Brandon Pettigrew, contributed more than 1,000 hours of labor.

In Kansas City, Mo., a grade school received a playground it was lacking since its original construction 25 years ago. In New York, a new playground gave young children a place to play at a school previously offering only equipment for older students.

The United Way Healthy Kids Zones—Driven by GMC offered thousands of children the opportunity to climb, build upper body strength, promote balance and agility, and develop strength and endurance. The playground equipment, paid for by GMC and supplied by GameTime, is designed to help children develop active, healthy bodies, as well as personal and social skills.

“GMC recognizes how important it is to raise awareness about the issue of childhood obesity and to create new opportunities for young people to lead healthier lifestyles,” said Craig Bierley, GMC Advertising and Sales Promotion director. “By working with the NFL and United Way, GMC is helping make communities stronger.”

2012 Detroit auto show video: 2013 Buick Encore

The Buick Encore paves the way for a new market segment: The very-compact upscale SUV. The Encore is smaller than the Chevrolet Equinox. In fact, it is 13 inches shorter than a Toyota RAV4. When it launches next year, the Encore may be the first vehicle of its kind in America. The BMW X1 and Audi Q3 are its natural competition, but the Buick is expected to beat them to market here, assuming those Germans even make it here at all.

The Encore fully utilizes the global nature of GM’s vehicle development system. Developed in the United States, the Encore will be built in South Korea. Although the Encore is expected to sell modestly here, Opel and Vauxhall variants will likely ring up more sales in Europe. And given the popularity of Buick in China, the Encore is expected to do well there.

I was able to sit in the Encore for a bit while filming our auto show video. It’s a bit odd--like sitting in an Enclave that was squeezed out of a tube. You sit up high, but the cabin feels really narrow. Rear-seat leg room is surprisingly decent, but the dramatic upward sweep of the beltline reduces the rear glass area to the detriment of visibility.

The Encore’s 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine is shared with the Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic. If the Encore’s curb weight sticks to the claimed 3,300 pounds for an all-wheel-drive version (just a bit more than the Cruze), it should have reasonable performance. Active noise cancellation, a Buick first, aims to help the Encore achieve the quietness that’s always been a brand hallmark.

But how will the Encore do when cross-shopped with other small SUVs? Directly on the other side of Cobo Hall from the Buick booth were several 2013 Ford Escapes. This Escape has a nicely-done interior with much more room, and it also can be had with a small-displacement turbo engine. No pricing was announced on Encore (or Escape yet), but it’s likely that the Encore and Escape will overlap in price. Then there is that new RDX that was also introduced in Detroit. It all comes down to price, and whether American shoppers are looking for the premium attributes the Encore offers, yet not coveting space that is available in competing models.

We’ll see how this new direction for Buick works when we buy one in early 2013 to test.

Buick Verano Earns IIHS 2012 Top Safety Pick

Brand’s 2012 lineup earns Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s designation

DETROIT – The all-new Buick Verano, with its 10 standard air bags, is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick for 2012, and completes a sweep of Buick cars and crossovers earning the designation.

General Motors is among industry leaders with a total of 14 IIHS 2012 Top Safety Picks, including 13 models that previously qualified for the 2011 award and were carried over to 2012 because their structure is substantially the same as the institute tested for 2011.

“GM set a goal that every new product would be designed to meet or exceed the third-party metrics that IIHS and others use to communicate crash worthiness to consumers,” said Gay Kent, GM executive director of Vehicle Safety. “We are now seeing the results from that commitment.”
In addition to the Buick LaCrosse, Regal and Enclave, 2011 carryover winners included the Chevrolet Cruze, Sonic, Volt, Equinox, Malibu and Traverse; the Cadillac CTS (sedan) and SRX, and GMC Terrain and Acadia.

The IIHS tests vehicles to determine how well they protect occupants in front and side crash tests, in rollovers via a roof strength test, and simulated rear impacts to evaluate seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries. The Verano achieved a “good” score in all four types of tests performed and has standard electronic stability control, which the IIHS requires for Top Safety Pick designation.

The Verano is designed to help drivers avoid crashes, while protecting occupants in the event a crash occurs. Standard safety features include:

Ten air bags: Driver and front passenger dual-stage frontal and seat-mounted side pelvic/thorax air bags; rear outboard seat-mounted side-impact airbags; head curtain side air bags with rollover protection that cover front and outboard rear seating rows; driver and front passenger knee air bags.
Rollover sensors which can activate the head curtain side air bags if sensors determine an imminent rollover. In a rollover, the air bags stay inflated longer to provide increased occupant protection.
StabiliTrak electronic stability control helps the driver maintain control by comparing the path being steered by the driver with the actual response and, when necessary, applying the brakes or adjusting the throttle or a combination of both.
Disc brakes with ABS to provide sure stops and full-function traction control to make the most of available traction in adverse weather conditions.
Front safety belt pretensioners to reduce forward movement and load-limiting retractors to help manage forces during a collision
Collapsible pedal system which allows the pedals to detach during a crash to reduce the risk of leg or ankle injuries.
OnStar, which features the Automatic Crash Response System that uses GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in the event of a crash that deploys the air bags.
Strong body structure to absorb crash energy and provide a protective “safety cage” around occupants. More than 60 percent of the body structure is composed of advanced steels.

“Safety is a top priority in Buick’s product renaissance as evidenced by earning these accolades from IIHS on every model,” Kent said. “Our customers can have confidence in the safety performance of every Buick for sale today.”

Terrain and Acadia Continue to Attract New GMC Customers

DETROIT – For the third consecutive time since the GMC Terrain debuted in 2009, the smaller SUV is on track to end the year with more than half its sales coming from brands outside General Motors. And more than one in five is coming from import car and truck brands including Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.

The GMC Acadia also continues to attract new customers to the brand. Like Terrain, Acadia is on track to count more than half of its owners from outside GM in 2011, continuing a four-year trend for the full-size crossover.

Acadia has the lowest cost of ownership in its segment, according to ALG, which tracks residual values, or how much a vehicle is expected to be worth after a certain number of years. Through November, total Acadia sales were up 18.6 percent year to date.

New in the 2012 GMC Terrain is the industry’s first crash avoidance system that exclusively uses a single camera to help drivers avoid front-end collisions. This technology is coupled with lane-departure warning for $295. Starting in Spring 2012, GMC’s new Intellilink infotainment system will be an option. Terrain sales were up 47.3 percent through November.

“Acadia and Terrain are industry leaders in both design and technology,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Buick and GMC Sales and Service. “Consumers are taking notice, as evidenced by each model’s sales increases through the first 11 months of 2011.”

After being redesigned for the 2011 model year, Sierra HD pickups are also ending their first full calendar year on a high note. Total sales were up 30.7 percent in November, and retail sales of ¾-ton extended-cab models were up 74.2 percent.

Retail sales of all Sierra pickups – ½ ton, ¾ ton and one ton – were up a combined 22.4 percent in November.

Driven: 2012 Buick LaCrosse eAssist

Hybrid or V-6? That's the choice Buick is offering LaCrosse buyers for 2012, and neither option is extra-cost.

The V-6 is a 3.6-liter that makes 303 hp, which is considerably more power than you get with the 4-cylinder hybrid. The V-6 also is alone in offering the option of all-wheel drive.

The hybrid, which Buick calls eAssist, is a mild hybrid, in that it can't propel the car solely on electric power, even at low speeds. Instead, as the car's name implies, it assists with 15 hp and 79 pound-feet of torque, helping the 182-hp four-cylinder accelerate this 3835-pound car. More importantly, it allows the engine to shut down at stoplights and then smoothly and instantly restart, aiding the cause of fuel economy. Speaking of miles per gallon, the LaCrosse eAssist is EPA rated at an impressive 25/36 mpg. That's much better than the 19/30 mpg for unassisted four-cylinder offered previously, not to mention far more economical than the V-6's 17/27 mpg.

A six-speed automatic, instead of a stepless CVT, gives the LaCrosse conventional-feeling throttle response rather than the elastic response conveyed with a CVT. Speaking of response, though, with the LaCrosse's ultra-tall final drive ratio, you really have to put your foot into it to awaken this powertrain. On a positive note, the 2.4-liter Ecotec --which, like many direct-injected four-cylinders, is not known for its mellifluous sound quality -- here has been so effectively muffled that could almost be a V-6, at least under 3000 rpm. And the car is very quiet overall.

If that's what you'd expect from a Buick, then so too is the chassis. The car comfortably sops up bumps but would benefit from greater damping of body motions, to quell squat and dive. The electrically assisted power steering is rather numb and artificial-feeling.

As in many other hybrids, the eAssist battery pack is located behind the rear seat, and it takes up a bit of trunk room (as do the old-fashioned-style gooseneck hinges and their big plastic housings).

GM Lansing Delta Township Plant Builds Millionth Vehicle

LANSING, Mich. – A Crystal Red Tintcoat GMC Acadia Denali rolled off the production line at General Motors’ Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant today, the 1 millionth vehicle produced at the automaker’s newest assembly plant in North America.

“This milestone shows the dedication of our team members to provide the highest-quality crossovers,” said plant manager Scott Whybrew. “Our team has established a strong foundation by continually improving our plant operations in order to exceed the expectations of our customers.”

Since starting production in 2006, Lansing Delta Township has manufactured the Saturn Outlook, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, Acadia Denali and Buick Enclave. A white Outlook was the first vehicle produced on May 24, 2006.

The plant currently employs approximately 3,700 employees on three shifts and can manufacture 290,000 vehicles a year.

“Producing the millionth vehicle would not be possible without the great people we have here,” said UAW Local 602 Chairman Rick Martinez. “Our employees are highly trained, and we couldn't create the models with such high quality without our people.”

LaCrosse GL Concept Refines Buick’s Signature Style

LOS ANGELES – When designers set out to capture the essence of Buick luxury for the LaCrosse GL concept vehicle, they looked to the fine cuisine, heirloom objects and enriching experiences the brand’s customers savor. The design study is on display at the L.A. Auto Show through Nov. 17.

Buick’s color and trim designers worked from a palette of cabernet red, dark cocoa brown and caramel choccachino. They took inspiration from the burnished metal of antique jewelry, ombré patina on vintage guitars and flocked lining of keepsake boxes. For GL’s French-stitched premium leather seats, the designers looked to the understated elegance of classic club chairs and contours of windswept sand dunes. And their use of smooth suede for the headliner is designed to invite one’s touch like a favorite pair of gloves.

“The LaCrosse GL concept expresses Buick’s distinctly human kind of luxury – one that is as warmly inviting as it is elegant and refined,” said David Lyon, executive director of design. “The design cues that already distinguish the production LaCrosse – such as the premium leather-upholstered seats, ice blue ambient lighting and soft touch surfaces – are amplified in the GL and serve as inspiration for future Buick models.”

LaCrosse GL’s cabernet red exterior paint is complemented by brushed and tinted chrome accents on the grille, door handles and deck lid, as well as around the windows, taillights and headlights. Machine-face, satin-finish 20-inch rims fill the wheel wells for a firmly planted appearance.
“The brushed-and-tinted chrome trim gives the GL a more subdued appearance than if we had used bright chrome. The overall effect is more in keeping with Buick’s quietly confident aesthetic,” said Magdalena Kokoszynska, creative designer on LaCrosse GL.

GMC rolls out less expensive nav system, hints at apps to come

GMC has launched a new navigation system featuring a large, seven-inch screen, a lower price that is less than half that of some automaker systems, and app-like icon controls hinting at future additional functionality.

The $795 Color Touch Navigation System also includes a free three-month trial of XM traffic and weather services. After the trial, users will have the option of subscribing for $12.95 a month for the basic satellite radio subscription, plus $3.99 a month for traffic and weather data.

Navigating through menus is accomplished by tapping icons on the screen for weather, traffic, navigation, and other functions. While the icons lend a smart-phone-like look to the screen, no other application functionality is offered at this time. But a GMC representative strongly hinted that capability will be offered in the future. Other manufacturers including Hyundai and Toyota already offer apps for things like restaurant reviews and recommendations.

In addition to AM/FM and satellite radio and a CD player, Color Touch also includes USB and auxiliary audio inputs, and Bluetooth technology through OnStar for hands-free calls. The navigation system does not include voice activation, however.

Available now on the 2012 GMC Terrain SUV, Color Touch navigation will follow on more GMC models, and other GM divisions are scheduled to get their own versions of the system.

Driven: 2012 Buick Regal GS

How does a European sport sedan dovetail with an American luxury brand that exists because the Chinese want to ride in the back of pillowy four-doors? It's a mind-melting philosophical question, but the answer is simple for the masters of brand management. After a seven-year sabbatical, the forty-seven-year-old Gran Sport name is back.

The Buick Regal GS has its roots in Europe's Opel Insignia OPC, but don't call this a badge-engineering exercise. Buick opted not to use the OPC's strident 2.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 and Haldex all-wheel-drive system in a play for lower weight and higher fuel economy. Instead, our GS has a high-output version of the Regal Turbo's direct-injected, boosted four-cylinder driving the front wheels. Even so, compared with an Audi A4, the GS is about 200 pounds too heavy (at 3710 pounds) and comes up at least three miles short for every gallon of gas it swills (at 19/27 mpg city/highway).

Dialing the boost pressure from 15 psi to 20 psi pushes power from 220 hp to 270 hp and smooths out some of the awkward surges that plague the Regal Turbo. Despite the more civilized power delivery, the GS-tuned engine is still afflicted with subtle, uneven pulses at part throttle, and the turbocharger whistles and whirs like it's bolted into a Class 8 truck. At full tilt, it doesn't sound more exciting than any other frenzied four-cylinder, but the 2.0-liter turbo delivers prolonged bursts of power that stretch all the way to redline. Its 295 lb-ft of peak torque isn't reached until 2400 rpm, which translates to a single breath of lag leaving the line.

To combat torque steer, the GS employs the so-called HiPer Strut front suspension that decouples the steering and suspension geometries. It can't eliminate every tug at the steering wheel, but it does reduce the severity enough to turn punches into prods. The Sachs adaptive dampers are similarly adept at softening blows -- at least in their most compliant standard setting. There's now a mode (on top of sport) called GS that makes the ride -- and body control -- substantially tauter. Few adaptive suspensions manage to effect changes that are both as palpable and as constructive.

The nicely contoured steering wheel is backed by quick responses and a natural effort, although there isn't much feedback from the front wheels. New sport seats offer excellent bolstering without being too aggressive, and the six-speed manual swiftly clicks through light throws. (A six-speed automatic becomes available in early 2012.) Driven quickly over back roads, the Regal GS displays obedient fluidity, impressive composure, and surprising balance. The optional twenty-inch Pirelli PZero summer tires stick impressively through corners, and the chassis responds positively to trail-braking. The Regal GS doesn't have the connected, organic feel of the best sport sedans, but it is much sharper and more fun than an Acura TSX V-6 and more alert than an Audi A4.

Consumer Report 2011 Annual Car Reliability Survey: Most reliable American cars

Consumer Reports recently unveiled the results of its latest reliability survey, showing that Asian brands continue to occupy the top-tier, claiming nine of the top 10 spots in our rankings. However, the findings among the domestic brands are noteworthy, and there’s plenty of good news within each segment.

We’re often asked how the domestics’ reliability stacks up, especially with some people wanting to specifically buy American. (Of course, defining what is an “American” car can be a challenge.) The results show that there are some very reliable U.S.-branded models, but they also remind of potential risks with buying first-year models.

Buick Verano Sets High Standard for Seat Comfort

DETROIT – Designing for seat comfort in the all-new 2012 Buick Verano required at least 1,000 hours of development to help prevent “hot spots” from happening on long drives and help protect hair-dos from head rest interference.

Engineers benchmarked Verano against key competitors, including Lexus IS and Acura TSX, to deliver the seat comfort and interior craftsmanship that customers have come to expect from the luxury brand.

“When we set out to design a comfortable interior for Verano our goal was for customers to feel like vacation begins as soon as they get in the car, and not when they reach their destination,” said Brian Schell, Verano program engineering manager. “By making comfort our first priority, we were able to create seats that will make customers feel more at ease and connected to the car for a more-satisfying ride experience.”

Verano uses the same grade of premium leather, support foam and plush padding as LaCrosse, but the compact’s seat bolsters are designed to offer more side support to hold passengers in the most-comfortable position possible. The seat is designed to prevent “hot spots” from occurring when driving long distances.

In addition to the 1,000 hours of development, another several thousand hours went into vehicle testing as part of Verano’s chassis control work and ride development. Large men and small women spent anywhere from minutes to hours sitting in Verano’s seats to give feedback to the engineers.
“Developing comfortable seats is both an art and a science,” Schell said. “Knowing how to translate a physiological impression into tangible design elements is the art, and knowing how to execute the design is the science.”

High-Mileage Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain To Get Eco eAssist System For 2014?

The mild-hybrid system that General Motors calls eAssist (on the 2012 Buick Lacrosse and Regal models) will also appear on the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco version.

But now it appears that the system will spread further across GM's product lines, with a report on GMInsideNews that it will appear on both the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossover utility vehicles for the 2014 model year.

With the 2013 Malibu launching solely in its highest-mileage Malibu Eco form at first, demand for the 2.4-liter EcoTech engine with the hybrid alternator-starter attached is expected to decline once an all-new 2.5-liter non-hybrid four is offered later in the model year as the base Malibu engine.

To keep monthly production of its mild-hybrid engines as consistent as possible, GM reportedly plans to offer that engine in the Equinox and Terrain (which are built in the same factories and largely identical under the skin), starting in 2013.

The Lacrosse with eAssist is rated by the EPA at 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, improvements of 32 and 20 percent respectively over the 2011 Lacrosse fitted with the non-hybrid 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (rated at 19 mpg city, 30 mpg highway).

Terrain and Acadia Gain Ground in the Golden State

DETROIT – When Joanne Grimaldi, an avid cyclist from San Jose, Calif., decided to replace her pickup truck with a more fuel-efficient vehicle, she picked the GMC Terrain because it can haul multiple bicycles while offering an EPA-rated 32 mpg in highway driving.

“On our 200-mile bike rides, my friends and I take turns driving and biking, and I always get compliments about how nice the Terrain is to drive,” said Grimaldi, who rides with the Bay Area's Almaden Cycle Touring Club. “I really like the backup camera, leather interior, OnStar and hands-free control of my phone. Although I enjoyed driving a truck, I still feel like the Terrain gets respect on the roads, while getting better fuel economy.”

Grimaldi is one of many Californians discovering the benefits to owning a Terrain and other Professional Grade GMC vehicles. GMC sales are up 21 percent in the Golden State so far this year with Terrain sales up 39 percent.

Californians also are discovering the GMC Acadia crossover, sales of which are up 26 percent so far this year. The crossover gets better highway fuel range and offers more cargo space than Ford Explorer, and it has room for up to eight passengers.

“We’ve seen a lot of families gravitating from larger vehicles to Acadia and Terrain due to their fuel-efficiency, features and styling,” said Dick Stricklen, owner of Motor City Buick-GMC in Bakersfield. “Our Acadia sales alone have nearly doubled in the past two months, thanks in part to the upscale Denali model’s exclusive styling and premium content.”

Terrain and Acadia fueled GMC’s best sales month of the year in August and its 23^rd consecutive month of retail sales gains nationwide, with sales to individual customers up 26 percent and total sales up 40 percent year over year.

“As a long-time California resident, GMC's latest success is not a big surprise to me,” said James Bell, General Motors’ head of consumer affairs. “This brand has resonated well with the laid-back yet progressive lifestyle we have enjoyed out here for many years, but the Acadia and Terrain are the first GMC vehicles that merge our personalities with our environmental priorities.”

Terrain uses lightweight eco-friendly parts including a plant fiber-reinforced ceiling liner, recycled plastic from soft drink and water bottles in its rigid plastic grille frame, and recycled textile insulation in its carpet assembly, dashboard and cargo area. Acadia uses similar eco-friendly materials. Both vehicles are at least 85 percent recyclable by weight, with recyclable steel accounting for the greatest contribution.

GM facilities worldwide recycle 90 percent of the waste they generate. In 2010 alone, the automaker recycled or reused 2.5 million tons of waste materials at its plants worldwide – enough to fill 6.8 million extended-cab pickup trucks that, if parked end-to-end, would stretch around the world.

Buick noise and vibration engineers fine-tuned Verano to the highest standard of quietness by replicating the hushed interior of another luxury sedan – the Buick LaCrosse.

“By positioning the Verano against the very best, our noise and vibration team went above and beyond to deliver the quiet driving experience for which Buicks have become known,” said Chuck Russell, Verano vehicle line director. “Quiet-tuning components and systems are built into every facet of the Verano’s architecture.”

Vehicles generate noise in a number of ways, including the transmission and gears, air induction and exhaust, electro and electromechanical parts, fuel delivery and brake function, as well as road and wind noise.

A dozen noise-reducing and noise-cancelling technologies are used throughout Verano’s body structure for increased cabin isolation and quietness – all without adding net weight to the car:

Among the 200 parts that typically come under scrutiny during noise analysis is the air induction system, which helps engine efficiency and performance. Special tuning elements were made to Verano’s clean air duct to remove harsh frequencies during vehicle acceleration.

Verano’s acoustic engine cover, alternator and refined engine accessory drive system are designed for quiet operation, and its six-speed automatic transmission allows the engine to operate at lower – and less noisy – speeds on the highway.

DETROIT – The GMC Sierra 3500HD won PickupTrucks.com’s “Heavy Duty Hurt Locker” comparison test, a grueling showdown among industry heavyweights that included towing 19,400-pound fifth-wheel trailers up and over some of the most demanding grades in the United States.

“We procured similarly equipped trucks from Ford, Ram and GMC and put them through the paces, towing up and down some of the toughest grades in the country covering a total of 2,200 miles,” said Mike Levine, editor of PickupTrucks.com. “When we analyzed the data, the GMC Sierra 3500HD simply outperformed the trucks from Ford and Ram.”

The results of the comparison conducted July 11-18 between Denver, Colo. and Laughlin, Nev., reflect improvements to the 2012 Sierra 3500HD that give Sierra best-in-class towing for both conventional and fifth-wheel trailers.

“Customers choose full-size trucks for their capabilities,” said Rick Spina, vehicle line executive for full-size trucks. “For 2012, we built on the foundation we created in 2011, with engineering changes and additional validation designed to make the most capable heavy-duty pickup even better. Based on PickupTrucks.com’s test results, it looks like we got the job done.”

For enhanced fifth-wheel towing, engineers strengthened the pickup box sills and other box structures, rear springs, u-bolts and box mounts, and upgraded the shock tuning. As a result, Sierra 3500HD now has a best-in-class tow rating of 23,000 pounds, up from 21,700 pounds in 2011.

Sierra also will lead the class in dually payload, with a 7,215-lb. payload for the 3500HD regular cab gasoline dually. Updates to the trailer hitch receiver increase conventional towing to 18,000 pounds, up from 17,000 pounds. Both changes will be on models arriving in dealerships in the fourth quarter.

General Motors to unveil new Buick models

For the longest time now, the automotive community has regarded the Buick models as a “sensible luxury” vehicle like its competitors Acura and Lexus. Meaning, Buick isn’t really in line with performance luxury vehicles like the BMW and Audi whose direct competitor from the General Motors line is the Cadillac. Whenever the name Buick comes up in conversations or when you talk to Buick experts, you’d get the idea that Buick isn’t in par with Mercedes-Benz.

Anyway, like most brands, the automotive community still wonders what the world can expect from the brand in the years to come.

There have been reports that American car company General Motors is gearing up to unveil a redesigned version of the Opel Astra as a three-door Buick Astra model to US consumers. However, we still have no reports about the specifications and engine details.

The Buick Astra model is not the only model that’s been getting the limelight. There’s also the production of the so-called Baby Enclave which is a five-seater compact crossover model which is expected to roll out in the 2013 product line. Recall: 2012 Buick LaCrosse for faulty electronic stability control

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and General Motors are recalling more than 4,000 Buick LaCrosse vehicles for failing to meet federal requirements for electronic stability control, or ESC.

According to NHTSA, certain models of the 2012 Buick LaCrosse were manufactured between June and July with an improperly calibrated Stabilitrak ESC system. The flaw may prevent the control system from detecting malfunctioning sensors and fail to alert drivers of a problem with the Stabilitrak feature. The result: The ESC may activate improperly, causing sudden and unexpected changes to how the sedan handles which may lead to a collision.

GM is expected to alert affected LaCrosse owners this month to bring the to their local dealerships. Mechanics there will reprogram the Stabilitrak's electronic brake control module free of charge.

Buick Regal GS pricing to begin at $35,310

DETROIT -- General Motors announced today that prices for the 2012 Buick Regal GS, a sporty performance model that aims to endear the brand to younger drivers, will start at $35,310, including transportation costs.

When the Regal GS goes on sale later this fall it will be the most expensive car in the Buick line, trailing only the Enclave crossover -- which starts at $36,600.

With a 270 horsepower 2.0 liter direct-injected turbocharged four-cylinder engine, GM says the Regal GS gets an estimated 27 mpg highway. At first, the GS will only be available with a six-speed manual transmission, but GM says that a six-speed automatic transmission will be available later in the model year.

GM also announced pricing for the 2012 Regal with eAssist, which will start at $29,530, including transporation. eAssist is a $2,000 option on the base model Regal, which starts at $27,530. The 2011 Regal started at $26,360.

The Regal with eAssist gets 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway – exceeding the highway fuel economy of the higher priced Lexus HS Hybrid and the Lincoln MK7 Hybrid, GM said.

Buick Looking to Get Younger, Adds New Models with Pizzazz

Buick is working hard to shed its image of the “old guy car.” No longer a brand that whisks grandparents to bingo and doctors’ appointments, it now offers luxurious, high-end and even sporty sedans and crossovers aimed at the pre-Medicare generation.

Buick will build on its rebranding over the next few years, redesigning many models and introducing new ones. In all, Buick will retool or introduce six different models starting in 2013, and expect the brand to take on a completely new look by the 2016 model year. With all of these changes Buick will go through, parent company GM hopes to continue attracting a younger demographic, but without alienating Buick’s “traditional” buyer.

General Motors is leaner and meaner, but is it greener? It’s not going from big T-bone steaks to salads, but may be downgrading to beef jerky. As part of a plan to remain viable in a volatile economy, GMC, once GM’s trucks-only division, has plans to expand its range. In addition to its earthy sounding names – Terrain, Granite, Yukon, etc. – GMC is actually getting a little earthy by expanding its hybrid offerings on future models. This represents a crucial shift for the big truck division as it prepares itself for a future where everyone, even truck buyers, want more fuel efficient, wallet and eco-friendly vehicles.

The GMC Granite subcompact crossover, a concept revealed at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, has done what few concepts ever do: Become a real car. The Granite should hit showrooms in the fall of 2012 as a 2013 model. With its big wheels and aggressive, boxy styling, the 2013 GMC Granite could be a domestic alternative against vehicles like Kia Soul, Scion xB, and Nissan Cube.

The 2013 GMC Granite will come with a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, while a 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter engine may be offered for those seeking a little more power. REVIEWS: 2011 Buick Enclave CXL-2 AWD

Four years after its introduction, the Buick Enclave remains a strong competitor -- and a strong seller -- in a tough segment. To quantify the latter point, consider that Buick has sold 23,998 Enclaves through the first five months of the year, compared with 18,821 Acura MDXs, 2112 Lincoln MKTs and 3872 Audi Q7s. Those sales would be in addition to the 33,526 mechanically identical GMC Acadias that were sold predominantly through the same dealer network during the same period.

The Enclave's styling, in my opinion, remains a big factor behind its appeal. It's expressive and instantly identifiable as a Buick -- something that cannot be said of the "globally" developed LaCrosse and Regal -- but isn't overdone, as is the case with the Lincoln MKT. That theme continues inside, where the simple round gauges and tasteful wood trim don't say GM parts bin.

Most important, the Enclave drives really well for a proper seven-seat vehicle. The steering has just the right amount of weight and feedback for a vehicle of this size, and is very accurate. The suspension doesn't crash over bumps but doesn't float, either.

There are a few places where the Enclave shows some gray hairs. The in-cabin technology, for instance, looks and feels every bit like it's been on the market four years, even though it has, in fact, received updates like Bluetooth connectivity. Keyless ignition isn't an option, something I might not have noticed if not for the very antiquated-looking keyless entry remote. On a more substantive note, I wonder if GM should consider expanding the engine lineup. No doubt, the 3.6-liter V-6 will appeal to the majority of customers in this segment and for good reason, as it offers a nice balance of respectable efficiency and smooth power. But with the Dodge Durango offering a V-8 on one end and Ford preparing the four-cylinder Explorer on the other, perhaps GM should follow suit, at least on some of its Lambda SUVs.

Pandora Internet Radio Integration Spreads to Buick & GMC Models; More Automakers Plan Integration

Pandora‘s efforts—inadvertently or not—to squelch terrestrial radio continue to expand. The streaming radio service is available in a number of BMWs, Fords, Mercedes-Benzes, and Minis, and this week the company announced that it will soon be serving Pandora-monium to Scions and even more Ford and Lincoln models.

Ten Ford models and two Lincolns now support the streaming radio app, whereas before only the Ford Fiesta, Fusion, Mustang, and Lincoln MKZ were offered with the necessary AppLink SYNC software. Although you can always listen to Pandora in the car through your phone and the car’s AUX input jack, it means your hands have to be on the phone; the integrated SYNC/Pandora system can be controlled through the car’s stereo- or steering wheel–mounted controls.

Several automakers are working to integrate Pandora’s mobile app with their on-board audio systems. Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Hyundai, and Toyota all plan to offer the capability in their cars in the near future. Owners of older vehicles or those in the market for an aftermarket audio system can find Pandora integration in offerings from Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, and Pioneer; a compatible Sony system will hit the market soon.

2012 Buick LaCrosse to get more powerful V-6

DETROIT -- General Motors said today that the 2012 Buick LaCrosse will get a more powerful version of its direct-injected, V-6 engine when the sedan goes on sale this summer.

The engine will deliver 303 hp, up 23 hp from the current version. It will be available on most trim levels at no extra cost from the LaCrosse's standard 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine with GM's eAssist mild hybrid stop-start system.

Despite the added power, the new engine will deliver the same fuel economy as the current V-6: 17 mpg city/27 highway.

GM is using "lighter-weight components and enhancements to improve the engine's performance, efficiency and durability," Tom Sutter, global V-6 engineer, said in a statement.

The engine is made of a lighter-weight aluminum alloy. A new cylinder-head design has larger intake valves and longer-duration intake camshafts. Holding open the larger valves longer pulls more air into the combustion chamber, producing more power.

The 2012 LaCrosse will be the first GM vehicle to get eAssist, which combines a lithium ion battery and an electric motor-generator that enables regenerative braking.

The powertrain will generate 182 hp and get 25 mpg city/37 highway, GM estimates, up from 19 mpg city/30 highway on the 2011 model.

LaCrosse sales are down 7 percent this year, to 23,362 units, through May.

GMC Launches Shopping App for Smartphones

GMC has introduced a mobile app for the Apple iPhone and other Android phones enabling users to shop, research, and configure a GMC vehicle. The GMC Showroom App has photos and videos of the latest GMC models and is now available for iPhone users in the Apple App store. On the Android market, the release is scheduled for the end of July. The app will be compatible with the iPhone ions 3.1 or better and the 1.6 OS or better (excluding Honeycomb) for the Android.
Consumers using the app can configure GMC vehicles and compare them to the competition. A simple interface makes it easy to locate a GMC dealer in their area, request a quote, schedule a dealer test drive, or view current offers.

“We recognize that smartphones play an important role in our customers’ lives, including purchase decisions,” said John Schwegman, U.S. vice president of GMC marketing. “The new GMC Showroom App provides our customers with the advanced technology they have come to expect of the GMC brand and the convenience to easily engage with their GMC dealer.”

A survey conducted by Chadwick Martin Bailey and iModerate Research Technologies revealed more than 50 percent of consumers polled use their smartphones to shop. Smartphone sales are expected to continue to increase, suggesting that there may be a growing market for well-executed automaker smartphone apps.

Buick releases pricing of new mild hybrid LaCrosse e-Assist

Buick has announced pricing of $30,820 for the LaCrosse e-Assist, which becomes the base LaCrosse now, replacing the regular 2.4-liter four-cylinder version. The sticker includes an $850 destination charge.

A conventional 3.6-liter V6 engine is still optional.

The car uses GM’s mild-hybrid belt-alternator-starter hybrid system, along with a 2.4-liter version of GM’s four-cylinder Ecotec engine. In its previous life this system was used in the Malibu Hybrid. However, in the Buick, it's an evolved version that uses a new 115-volt lithium-ion battery that weighs 65 pounds. The conventional six-speed automatic transmission remains.

Although GM refrains from calling it a hybrid, the mild hybrid system shuts down the engine at stops and provides some regenerative braking capacity. It also improves low-end torque and throttle response but cannot propel the car without the gas engine running.

GM says the newly renamed eAssist system should net the LaCrosse a 37 mpg EPA-rating on the highway, though the agency has not yet signed off on that rating. The last four-cylinder LaCrosse we tested returned 37 mpg on the highway and 15 mpg in the city, for an overall 23 mpg. GM claims a 24 percent fuel economy improvement overall.

We think positioning the eAssist as the base version is a good move. The LaCrosse e-Assist will go on sale later this summer.

Shanghai – Shanghai GM announced today that sales of Buick products have surpassed 3 million units since the joint venture began offering its original vehicle brand in 1999.

Buick has become one of China’s fastest-growing passenger car brands. With Shanghai GM’s rollout of its new Buick brand strategy in 2008, sales have increased by more than 100,000 units annually.

Shanghai GM has introduced the Buick Intelligent Performance (BIP) system, which merges European-style suspensions and powertrains with American vehicle communication systems. It is enabling Shanghai GM’s Buick portfolio to fully meet the demands of domestic consumers for products that can handle varying road and weather conditions, lower fuel consumption and emissions, and provide improved performance.

This is in line with Shanghai GM's Drive to Green strategy. The adoption of technologies such as intelligent direct injection has greatly improved the efficiency of Buick products built and sold in China.

Buick has more than 400 4S stores across China and offers the award-winning Buick Care aftersales service brand. DETROIT – Jaclyn Yuppa of Atlanta considers herself an early adopter. The 31-year-old Duke MBA and Fortune 50 marketing professional favors handbags by new, lesser-known designers, likes to try the latest niche cuisine before it goes mainstream, and prefers driving a car that isn’t commonplace. That’s why she recently traded her Mercedes for a new 2011 Buick Regal luxury sport sedan.

“The Regal turns heads,” Yuppa said of her experiences driving around Atlanta’s uptown Buckhead district. “Complete strangers have told me what a great-looking car it is. They’re usually pleasantly surprised to find out that it’s a Buick.”

Yuppa is like many new-to-Buick owners in that she cross-shopped luxury imports, but was won over by the Regal’s luxury amenities, contemporary styling, fuel efficiency, overall high quality and value. In many cases, Regal, which launched from Germany one year ago this month and is now produced in Canada, is the first domestic vehicle these buyers have considered, much less owned. By early 2011, one in three Regal buyers was trading in an import vehicle, according to Power Information Network (PIN) data.

“The addition of nicely styled, more efficient, fun-to-drive products like the Regal opens Buick up to consideration by a completely different set of buyers,” said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific, a marketing research and consultancy firm. “They will tend to be younger, and young-at-heart, more adventuresome and more enthusiastic about the cars they drive. The fact that the Regal is attracting these people to the brand shows Buick is on the right track.”

Consumer interest in Buick, the fastest-growing mainstream automotive brand in the United States, is on the rise. At Main Street in Motion, a touring test-drive event that pits Buick against other brands, exit polls revealed that public opinion of Buick improved by 125 percent and purchase consideration improved by 65 percent.

FIRST DRIVE: 2012 Buick Lacrosse 37-MPG eAssist Prototype

To date, Buick and "fuel economy" haven't often been used in the same sentence.

But the 2012 Buick LaCrosse, the brand's largest surviving car, will offer one engine option that's projected to deliver 25 mpg city, 37 mpg highway.
That's not bad for a midsize near-luxury sedan (though 1 mpg lower on city mileage than Buick had hoped).

We've just driven a development prototype of the 2012 LaCrosse fitted with the eAssist system that will be standard on the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, the smaller of two engines (the other is a 3.6-liter V-6).

Electric "boost"

It includes not only a start-stop function, saving gasoline when the car isn't moving, it also recaptures electric power via regenerative braking and stores it for use by an electric motor that assists the gasoline engine in short bursts.

That's what allows this "mild hybrid" system to improve fuel economy on the highway as well as in the city. The eAssist system was unveiled as an option for the 2012 Buick Regal at the Chicago Auto Show too; both cars will go on sale by the end of the year.

For 2011, the 2.4-liter engine is rated by the EPA at 19 mpg city, 30 mpg highway. So an increase to 25 mpg city, 37 mpg highway would be substantial: more than 30 percent in the city, almost 25 percent on the highway.

The big question is: Does the LaCrosse with eAssist drive like a Buick?

Buick Regal Turbo Gets Industry-First Turbo Direct-Injected Engine with Flex-Fuel Capability

PONTIAC, Mich – The 2011 Buick Regal Turbo is the first direct-injected turbocharged production car capable of running on any blend of gasoline or E85 ethanol, joining more than 5 million flex-fuel models General Motors has produced over the last 15 years.
The turbocharged Ecotec 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that powers the Regal will help GM reach its goal of offering more than 50 percent of its production in flex-fuel models by the end of 2012.

Attendees at the National Ethanol Conference in Phoenix will have the opportunity to drive the Regal and the flex-fuel GMC Terrain during conference breaks today.

Compared to earlier versions of the 2.0-liter Ecotec turbo, GM powertrain engineers have significantly upgraded the new engine to accommodate both E85 and to incorporate refinements.

Since ethanol requires a richer air-fuel mixture than gasoline, flex-fuel engines need higher flow-rate injectors. However, a flex-fuel engine can potentially have any combination of gasoline or up to 85 percent ethanol in the tank, so a sensor in the fuel system measures the blend in real-time. This allows the engine management system to automatically adjust the mixture to provide improved performance and reduced emissions and fuel consumption. Stainless steel fuel lines provide extra corrosion resistance to ensure that the Regal Turbo meets GM’s stringent durability requirements.

In the past, improving power output and reducing fuel consumption and emissions were often conflicting goals. By delivering fuel directly to the combustion chamber, the high-pressure injectors can now provide a more precise mixture for optimum combustion.

Turbochargers use the energy in the hot exhaust gas flow to drive a compressor that forces more air into the combustion chamber for on-demand power delivery. The twin-scroll turbocharger on the Ecotec engine provides two inlet paths to the turbine to maximize the kinetic and thermal energy delivered to the turbine.

“Lag and reduced vehicle launch response is one of the age-old concerns with previous turbo engines” said Ecotec chief engineer Mike Anderson.

2012 Buick Regal With eAssist: 26 MPG City, 37 MPG Highway Expected

The rumors started last week, and they were largely true: Buick plans to offer a model of its Regal compact sports sedan with the eAssist mild-hybrid system.

What we didn't have were the projected EPA mileage ratings (based on GM's internal tests). The company expects the 2012 Buick Regal with eAssist to be rated at 26 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, making it the most economical Buick model for 2012.

Unlike the larger 2012 Buick LaCrosse, which will fit the eAssist system as standard on the 2.4-liter Ecotec engine, the 2012 Regal will offer a base 2.4-liter engine without the system, and a version of the same engine with the fuel-saving powertrain as well.

The eAssist system consists of a small 0.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, mounted at the rear of the Regal's trunk along with its power electronics and control circuitry. While there is a slight reduction in trunk space, the Regal fitted with eAssist maintains a pass-through from the trunk to the rear passenger compartment.

An engine-mounted electric motor replaces a standard alternator, and is connected with a special tensioned belt that allows it both to be driven by the engine and to restart it and contribute torque for short periods.

The alternator-start acts as a generator to recapture energy that would otherwise be lost as heat from the brakes, using it to recharge the battery pack. It can also act as an electric motor to start the engine, as well as contributing some torque to assist the engine and avoid the transmission shifting to a lower gear under load.

The system is tuned to provide high power rather than sustained energy delivery. It does not provide full electric running, but allows the engine to switch off as the car comes to a stop, and then switches it on again as the driver's foot begins to lift off the brake pedal.

GM to add 3rd shift, 750 jobs at Flint truck plant

FLINT, Mich. -- General Motors Co. announced today that it is adding a third shift and 750 jobs at its Flint, Mich., assembly plant in response to healthy demand for heavy duty versions of its Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra pickups.

“Our heavy duty pickups are especially hot,” Mark Reuss, GM's president of North America, told hundreds of workers gathered on the plant floor.

Reuss told reporters that GM is “having a hard time supplying” heavy duty and crew-cab trucks, and that growing demand in recent months helped trigger the decision to produce more.

Re-engineered versions of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy duties were released last summer. The Silverado HD was named the 2011 Motor Trend Truck of the Year.

“We're smart enough to know when we have a hit on our hands,” Reuss said.

GM is rolling out several new small cars, which executives say is key to GM's ability to attract new buyers, especially if fuel prices rise. But sales of high-margin trucks “remain crucial to our success,” Reuss said.

Construction uptick aids demand

Reuss attributed some of the increased sales to improved housing starts and construction activity. The heavy duty trucks are a favorite of contractors and trades workers.

GM said it expects to start the additional shift by the third quarter, with new employees starting to arrive from other GM plants in the second quarter.

Recall: 2011 Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC Trucks - Rear axle cross pin

General Motors is expanding a previous recall of 2011 trucks to replace the rear axle cross pin, which may have been improperly heat-treated and could fracture, becoming displaced within the rear axle. If the pin moves out of position, it could create interference and cause the rear axle to lock. GM knows of one customer who has experienced the problem, resulting in a loss of power. No related accidents have been reported.

The recall now includes 26,751 vehicles, including Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Cadillac EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Colorado, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe; and GMC Canyon, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.

GM will begin the recall by January 25th. Owners will be asked to bring their vehicle to their local dealership to have a new rear axle cross pin install free of charge.

REVIEWS: 2011 GMC Acadia Denali

This big family truckster grew on me over a long weekend and a couple hundred miles of driving. I'm still not sure how I feel about the visual aspects of the Denali package (chrome wheels that look exactly like giant plastic hubcaps from AutoZone and bigger, lower body cladding), but the interior appointments were nice.

For the life of me, I could not figure out how to activate the head-up display (someone else had turned it on between photo sessions), nor could I reset the mpg counter. The trip odometers were buried as well. A quick breeze through the manual would have solved this, but I consider these types of nonintuitive telematics issues extremely annoying.

One thing the manual was absolutely NO help with was locating the USB jack for the iPod. I had to go online to discover it was in the dashtop compartment (probably not a good place for an electronic device in the summer), and in the dark I could not find the jack by feel. Once connected however, the iPod controls were easy to use.

The highway and around-town ride was very comfortable, and the Acadia seemed to be pretty maneuverable in the parking structure and crowded mall lots for a vehicle of its size.

Leaked: Buick’s 2012 Verano estimated pricing, trim levels, and initial engine specs

About a year from its official release in the United States, the 2012 Verano by Buick still tickles the curiosity of the dealers and consumers through a recent online survey initiated by the car manufacturer. The results of the survey give us an idea of how the Verano will be tagged which range between $21,000 and $26,000 depending on the availed trim level and the options.

According to General Motors, the final pricing for the Verano is not yet set. The survey though is looking into the price of four trims:

There will be a base version that might be priced between $20,900 and $21500. This Buick Verano will run on 2.4L 4-cylinder engine linked with a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

The Verano will also have 2 midlevel variants that will have tags at $22,100 to $22,700 and $23,300 to $23,900.

The top of the line version of the 2012 Verano will come with heated seats, 18 inch rims, leather upholstery, Bose audio, park assist, and remote start will set you back from $25,600 to $26,200.

The Buick Verano identity was confirmed around October by General Motors and hinted that the production of the car will start by fall next year at their Orion Township factory in Detroit.

The car manufacturer has earlier rolled out the Verano as the Buick Excelle GT in China. Both vehicles are using the Delta II global platform for compact cars of GM.

DETROIT – Consumer attraction to the all-new Buick Regal continued to heat up in November as NADAguides’ 2011 Car of the Year posted its best sales month since its launch earlier this year.

“Regal is definitely helping us reach new customers, including import owners,” said Sam Slaughter, dealer principal, Sellers Buick GMC in Farmington Hills, Mich. “We’re seeing BMWs and Lexuses traded in as well as Fords and Lincolns. And we expect the Regal Turbo to bring in even more, especially import owners looking for more performance.”

Regal’s rise reflects car buyers’ increasing awareness of Buick’s resurgence among luxury vehicle brands. The fastest-growing major automotive brand in the United States posted its 14th consecutive month of year-over-year retail sales gains in November with a 37 percent increase. Customer demand for Regal, along with LaCrosse and Enclave, has grown Buick’s retail sales 49 percent to date in 2010. Retail sales are those made to individual buyers.

“With each passing month, Regal is attracting new customers to Buick showrooms and leaving dealer lots faster than many cars in the midsize segment,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Buick & GMC Sales and Service. “Most impressively, 40 percent of Regal buyers are coming from non-GM brands and 28 percent are coming from imports.”

Regal is a semifinalist for the 2011 North American International Car of the Year awards, as voted by a jury of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.

In November, LaCrosse also posted year-over-year gains with retail sales up 15 percent year over year and 135 percent for the calendar year to date. Total sales for LaCrosse were up 20 percent year over year and 141 percent year to date.

Luxury Crossover Excels Under New, More Rigorous Government Testing System

DETROIT – The 2011 Buick Enclave has earned a five-star crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), further building on the luxury crossover’s leading safety rating record.

The Enclave previously received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick signifying best- possible “Good” ratings in frontal offset, side and rear crash tests.

Enclave was tested under NHTSA’s new rating system, implemented this fall for the 2011 model year. The new rating is based on more rigorous frontal and side crash tests in addition to rollover resistance testing. Under the new system, these three test conditions are combined mathematically into an “Overall Vehicle Score.” Under this methodology, the Enclave achieved an overall vehicle score of five stars – the highest rating possible - even though several individual tests resulted in four-star ratings.

“Earning five stars under the new rating system is an impressive feat – one that clearly demonstrates the strength of Enclave’s advanced structure, overall crashworthiness and effectiveness of its state-of-the-art safety technologies,” said Jeff Boyer, General Motors executive director of vehicle safety.
Enclave has a comprehensive safety system designed to protect passengers before, during and after a crash. Standard safety-enhancing features include a StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology, Panic Brake Assist and OnStar Automatic Crash Notification.

Enclave is equipped with six standard air bags: two dual-stage frontal air bags, two seat-mounted side-impact air bags in the first row and two roof rail-mounted head curtain side air bags that cover all three seating rows. Complementing the air bags is GM’s rollover sensing system, which activates the head curtain side air bags if sensors determine an imminent rollover. Additionally, first-row positions feature safety belt pretensioners with load limiters, which activate at the moment of a crash to take up slack in the safety belt and tailor the safety belt load to the severity of the crash.

DETROIT, Mich. (May 18, 2010) – Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) powered versions of the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans will be offered to fleet and commercial customers beginning later this year, General Motors Co. announced Monday.
The vans have specially designed engines for the gaseous fuels and come direct to the customer with the fully integrated and warranted dedicated gaseous fuel system in place.

“We’re listening to our fleet customers and dealers about offering options that help them achieve their business objectives”, said Brian Small, general manager of GM’s fleet and commercial operations. “The industry commitment to expand the CNG and LPG infrastructure in key fleet markets was an enabler to allowing us to introduce these options now.”

Going beyond the competition, GM’s proven Vortec 6.0L V8 engine receives hardened exhaust valves and intake and exhaust valve seats for improved wear resistance and durability for gaseous fuel systems. Along with dedicated gaseous fuel injection and fuel storage systems, both the CNG and LPG systems are fully integrated into the vehicle, and will meet EPA and CARB certification requirements, and be fully compliant with applicable motor vehicle safety standards.

The initial CNG offerings will be available on 2011 model year cargo vans and built at GM’s Wentzville assembly plant with the specialized Vortec engine installed. The vans are then completed at a separate facility with the dedicated gaseous fuel system and related vehicle calibrations before shipment to the Special Vehicle Manufacturer (SVM), Fleet Customer or GM Dealer.

Both CNG and LPG vans will carry GM's limited new vehicle warranty including the 5-year/100,000 mile transferable GM powertrain limited warranty.

“We’ve made choosing a CNG or LPG van easier for our customers,” said Joyce Mattman, director of GM’s commercial products and specialty vehicles. “No other manufacturer offers a commercial CNG or LPG option that provides a solution with this level of support and availability.”

Leveraging the same Vortec 6.0L V8 with hardened, durable components, a dedicated LPG gaseous fuel system will be offered on 2011 model year cutaway vans to fleet and commercial customers. The cutaways are then configured into cube, delivery, and shuttle bus vans depending upon the customer’s final requirements.

“We recognize the value in providing our fleet and commercial customers with a range of fuel saving and alternative fuel technologies,” Mattman said. ”The CNG and LPG additions are part of GM’s expanding alternative fuel portfolio including more than 17 E85-capable and five hybrid models in our fleet and commercial vehicle lineup.”

Buick LaCrosse gets mild hybrid system standard for 2012

It may not be much of a hybrid, but for 2012 the Buick LaCrosse will come standard with a mild-hybrid drivetrain. A development of the belt-alternator-starter hybrid system that last appeared in the slow-selling Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, the LaCrosse eAssist system is good for 37 mpg on the highway, according to General Motors.

The belt-alternator-starter (BAS) hybrid system is mated to GM’s 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine and a new-for-the-mild-hybrid six-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid drivetrain uses a new 115-volt lithium-ion battery, that weighs 65 pounds and still allows half of the rear seat to fold down to carry larger cargo. The new electric motor/starter cranks out 15 hp, which GM says is three times the hp available in the Malibu’s BAS system. The hybrid system shuts down the engine at stops and recaptures energy from the car’s momentum when stopping to boost fuel economy. GM claims there will be no price premium for the hybrid system. GM claims the system will boost fuel economy by 24 percent, compared with the four-cylinder 2011 LaCrosse. In our testing that four-cylinder LaCrosse already returned 37 mpg on the highway, and 15 mpg in the city, for an overall average of 23 mpg.

Engine Control Module Reliably Performs 125 Million Operations a Second

PONTIAC, Mich. – A 32-bit embedded processor with three megabytes of integrated flash memory gives the 2011 Buick Regal’s Ecotec 2.0L engine microcontroller the quickest throughput, or processing power, in the automotive industry.

For the Regal driver, this means more precise fuel delivery for the best-possible fuel economy, emissions and performance.

This is accomplished through an increased number of intake air adjustments and spark optimization during every combustion event, even when running at maximum engine speed of 6,350 rpm.

The turbo Regal’s microcontroller is part of the Engine Control Module (ECM), which controls all the functions of an engine including the operation of the 2.0L’s turbo, direct injection and variable valve timing systems. The microcontroller has some similarities with the central processor unit (CPU) in a home computer but is optimized specially for engine control.

“The ECM’s microcontroller executes the commands such as when to inject fuel into the engine’s combustion chambers,” said Karla Wallace, GM senior manager, global powertrain electronics engineering. “The software executed by the microcontroller comes from almost a million lines of code developed by GM and uses over 300 kilobytes of calibration data.”

In the 1980s, GM’s first powertrain control module had four kilobytes of memory and executed 1 million operations per second. Today, General Motors’ electronic control modules perform more than 125 million operations per second with unmatched reliability. The Regal’s modern engine controller is tested under extreme conditions for longevity and functionality.

“Three meg of flash memory and 128 MHz clock speed doesn’t sound like a lot in terms of computing power until you consider the environment these controllers have to live in,” said Wallace.

DETROIT -- The 2012 Regal GS will be Buick's sportiest model, a car positioned to attract younger buyers to the brand.

The Regal GS is a “step even further away from the traditional expectations for Buick,” said General Motors executive Dave Lyon, referring to the GS' styling and performance characteristics. Lyon is executive director of North American interior and global cross-brand design.

Buick continues to chop away at its stodgy image, aiming the Regal GS at Acura TSX and Audi A4 shoppers. These buyers are performance-minded and image-conscious, Buick says.

Lyon and other General Motors Co. executives spoke during a preview last month at the automaker's technical center in Warren, Mich. The Regal GS will be introduced tonight at a consumer event in Miami. Sales begin in the second half of 2011; sales of non-GS versions of the Regal began this past spring. Prices for the GS have not been announced.

GM adds compressed natural gas option to cargo vans aimed at fleet users

Compressed natural gas is now a fuel option for General Motors Co.'s full-sized cargo vans.

The fully integrated CNG fuel system option uses GM's 6.0-liter V-8 engine and carries a $15,910 sticker price. It is available on the 2011 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

The vehicles were unveiled today at the Green Fleet Conference in San Diego.

“Natural gas is an abundant and clean alternative fuel,” Beth Stanek, GM's director of federal environmental and energy regulatory affairs, said in a statement. “Based on today's CNG fuel rates and anticipated payback period, fleet investment in CNG can be quite affordable.”

Before the CNG application, the engine is modified to include hardened exhaust valves, and intake and exhaust valve seats for improved wear resistance and durability with gaseous fuel systems.

IIHS reveals most, least expensive cars to insure by type

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released a rating of which cars have the highest and lowest insurance claims by category. In general, 2007-2009 SUVs and sports cars fared better than most other vehicle types in minimizing insurance losses.

The top 10 vehicles with the lowest overall insurance losses were the Chevrolet Corvette convertible, Mazda Miata, Chevrolet Corvette coupe, Volkswagen New Beetle convertible, Saturn Sky, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Veracruz, Honda CR-V, Subaru Outback, and Toyota 4Runner.

Among the vehicles with the lowest claims rate for medical payments other than sports cars are the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 pickups, Honda Pilot, Audi A6, and Buick Enclave.

The results are relative, expressed on a scale with 100 representing the average car. Unlike in past reports, IIHS says it adjusted, or standardized, the results to reduce distortions from non-vehicle factors such as operator age, gender, and marital status and vehicle population density. Collision and comprehensive results are also adjusted to standardize the deductible.

Buick GMC Dealers Go Behind the Scenes

DETROIT – Nearly 900 of more than 1,000 Buick and GMC dealers invited from across the United States are going behind the scenes to see how the products they sell are built and to do their own test drives.

In a first for General Motors, the dealers are test driving Buick and GMC vehicles at GM’s Milford Proving Ground and touring the Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant to get a firsthand look at where the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia are assembled. The dealers are paying their own way to participate.

“We have never brought our dealers this close to our business. This program was created to give them a unique behind-the-scenes look,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Buick & GMC Sales and Service. “We want to empower our dealers to take what they learned here and share their experience with their customers and dealerships.”

The program, consisting of three waves, began Oct. 5. During each wave, approximately 300 dealers participate in vehicle test drives at GM’s Milford Proving Ground, a tour of Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant and a business meeting.

“This is a great time to be a Buick & GMC dealer,” said Bobby Cavender of Cavender Buick GMC in San Antonio. “GM dealers are excited about the future and the next generation of vehicles.”

GM reveals small Buick, the Verano, based on Chevy Cruze

As GM struggles to make the Buick brand more youthful, it is coming out with a wave of smaller and sportier cars.

First, there was the Regal, based on the Opel Insignia. Now comes news out of the Paris Auto Show that the company may base an even smaller Buick, called the Verano, on the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze compact.

The Verano will likely be produced as a 2012 model, at GM’s factory in Orion Township, Mich.

The car will likely be powered by the same 138-hp, turbocharged 1.4-liter engine that’s optional in the Cruze. Other engines may also be available. The Verano is currently sold in China as the Excelle.

GM Confirms New Dealer Network

DETROIT – General Motors today announced that it has concluded the dealer arbitration process and that effective Nov. 1, it will have a network of about 4,500 U.S. dealerships to sell and service customers for Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles.

The company also reported that many of these dealerships are participating in a major facilities upgrade program, with more than 300 updates already completed and about 1,000 projects scheduled through the end of 2010.

“Our dealers are the face of GM to our customers and valued members of the communities where they do business across America,” said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America. “We’re confident our dealer network will be the best in the business. It will be the right size with the right dealers to give our customers great service during and after the purchase.

“A strong, profitable dealer network selling and servicing the world’s best cars and trucks is a genuine market advantage,” Reuss said.

Although GM’s new dealer network is about 25 percent smaller than in early 2009, it remains the nation’s largest. This gives existing and potential GM customers more choice and convenience when it comes to where to buy a car and have it serviced.

“We spent a considerable amount of time and effort to work toward a mutually agreeable resolution with our dealers,” Reuss said. “We’re pleased that we could complete this process in what we believe is an effective and efficient manner.”

Dealers Pressing Buick for More Regals

POCONO, PA – General Motors Co., which launched production of the turbocharged 2.0L Ecotec-equipped Buick Regal at its plant is Russelsheim, Germany this week, is having trouble keeping up with demand for the base models in the U.S.

The turbocharged Regal, expected to hit showrooms in late November, will expand the model's portfolio. A higher-output version of the 2.0L turbo will go in the Regal GS performance model due in 2011.

So far, demand for the Regal in the U.S. is outstripping inventory, says Christopher M. Ayotte, marketing manager for the car. Receptivity in the market has been “amazing,” he says.
“Dealers are asking for double what we can provide in their monthly reorders,” Ayotte tells Ward's at the International Motor Press Assn. Test Day event here.

Ward’s data show GM held 5,920 units in the U.S. at the end of July, equivalent to an 87-day supply for the still-ramping-up Regal.

The average Regal transaction price is a little over $28,000, he says. The car bases at $26,995 and tops out at about $31,780. The turbocharged version will start at $29,495, with a fully equipped car reaching $35,185.

Production of the 2011 GMC Acadia Denali began this morning at General Motors' Lansing Delta Township assembly plant in Lansing, Michigan. The latest addition to the Acadia line will start arriving in dealerships later this month.

The first Acadia Denali to roll of the assembly line was a white diamond model. That particular Acadia will be delivered to a dealership in Vadosta, Georgia. Acadia Denali has a base price of $43,220, excluding destination charges.

2010 has been a banner year for heavy-duty pickup truck fans, with revamped entries from all three U.S. automakers making their debut this year. Of those, the HD pickups from both Chevrolet and GMC received the most subtle exterior updates, but virtually everything under their skins is new, including a heavily revamped version of the company's 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8.

All you have to do is figure out what you need the truck for and then check the appropriate boxes on the dealer's order sheet. Somewhere in the middle of this cacophony of choice lies the 2011 GMC Sierra 3500HD.

For 2011, the only notable visual changes to the heavy-duty Sierra are a slightly re-shaped front bumper with a larger air intake slot and a new grille. The grille on non-Denali Sierras like our tester receives a black, three-bar treatment with similar perforations to the chromed, four-bar version found on the premium truck. The rest of the sheetmetal is carried over from the GMT900HD styling that's been around since its debut in 2008, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

The overall appearance of the Sierra is more subdued and mature than the big rig look of the Dodge Ram HD or the Tonka motif of the Ford Super Duty. This is, after all, the "Professional Grade" choice. While we like the in-your-face designs of the Ram and Ford, customers choose heavy-duty trucks because of their capability; aesthetic decisions tend to be secondary. Thankfully, every heavy-duty truck on the market offers tremendous capability, including the HD Sierra, which we got to evaluate first-hand during the official launch event a few months ago, including payload hauling and towing.

Buick Partners with Food & Wine and Travel + Leisure with Consumer Lifestyle Event

Chicago – Buick, in partnership with Food & Wine and Travel + Leisure magazines, is launching a “cultural discovery” tour that engages consumers through premium lifestyle events.

The 10-city tour will introduce Buick to a group of select consumers, through test drives of the new 2011 Buick Regal sport sedan. Attendees will have the chance to learn culinary secrets from two of the top chefs in the United States, Bravo-TV Top Chef Masters Season Two winner Marcus Samuelsson and Food & Wine’s 2008 Best New Chef Michael Psilakis.

“This rich discovery tour combines everyday luxury that our customers have come to expect through food, wine, travel and the all-new Buick Regal,” said Craig Bierley, director, Buick GMC Advertising and Sales Promotion. “Through this unique opportunity, we are inviting consumers to discover the Regal as a performance sedan worthy of their consideration.”

The tour kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 18 in Chicago and concludes on Dec. 5 in Los Angeles. Buick Retail Sales Doubled in July, Driven by LaCrosse, Regal Demand

Total Buick sales up 60 percent 2010 calendar year to date

Detroit – Buick posted a 137-percent total sales increase in July compared to the same month last year. This includes a 104-percent increase in retail sales, driven by customer demand for the LaCrosse and the all-new Regal.

Following the introductions of the LaCrosse last summer and Regal this summer, Buick retail sales have climbed 41 percent for 2010 calendar year to date, with July the best retail sales month of the year.

“The LaCrosse and Regal continue to contribute heavily to our sales momentum,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Buick & GMC Sales and Service, “Both represent the modern, world-class cars coming from Buick. The Enclave crossover, introduced in 2007, also continues to add to our division’s strong retail sales gains.”

LaCrosse total sales increased four-fold in July, and retail sales almost tripled, compared to July 2009. Calendar year to date, LaCrosse total sales are up 228 percent compared to 2009.

The redesigned LaCrosse has garnered several awards since its introduction last summer, including being named MotorWeek’s Drivers’ Choice Award for “Best Luxury Sedan,” and a 2010 Top Safety Pick by the Institute for Highway Safety. To help meet keep consumer demand for LaCrosse, a third shift was added to the Fairfax Assembly facility in Kansas City, Kan.

The all-new 2011 Regal began arriving in dealerships in late May. Consumer demand for Regal has been encouraging, and the Regal is expected to be one of the brand’s highest-volume sellers as it reaches dealerships in higher numbers.

Regal is based on the award-winning Opel Insignia – the 2009 “European Car of the Year.” U.S. models start at $26,995, including a $750 destination charge, equipped with a 2.4L Ecotec direct-injected engine that delivers an estimated 182 horsepower and 30 miles per gallon on the highway. A 2.0L turbo engine will be available late this year, and Buick will introduce a performance Regal GS as well.

GM to Launch Brand-Specific OnStar Mobile Apps for Android and iPhone

Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC will soon launch applications for Android and Apple iPhone smartphones that allow vehicle owners to remotely view diagnostic information and control some aspects of their car’s operation.

Once a vehicle is paired with the app, drivers will be able to lock or unlock doors, sound the horn, or start their vehicle from anywhere they have cell service. (We see good prank possibilities with that horn bit.) The apps will also display the vehicle’s current fuel level, remaining oil life, tire pressure, average fuel economy, and odometer reading. An in-app button will place a call to OnStar operators.

Over the next few months, each of the General’s brands will roll out its own mobile app (somehow) tailored to its customers’ needs. All of them will have the aforementioned features, but each will add more functionality that appeal to brand buyers. We’re predicting a high-end restaurant guide for the Cadillac app and an on-screen measuring tape for the GMC version.

A GM spokesperson told us that the applications won’t work with the 2011 Buick Regal, due to problems integrating the latest ninth-generation OnStar hardware with the European-designed car. By this time next year, the 2012 Regal and every other GM vehicle should be compatible with the services. (Bad luck, Regal early adopters.) We don’t yet know whether you’ll have to pay for the apps; GM told us we’d have to wait and see how each brand prices its offering.

Additionally, the Chevrolet app won’t control the Chevrolet Volt, as the Volt will have its own application with features unique to the plug-in vehicle. The Volt app promises charge scheduling as well as notification of battery charge states, and should be available for free to Volt owners.

GM crafts lineups for next spike at the pump

General Motors Co. is planning for the return of $4-plus gasoline by introducing small or compact cars for each of its brands -- even GMC.

GM continues to predict gasoline prices will eventually rise to levels last seen in 2008, when consumers fled light trucks for smaller vehicles.

Also, federal fuel-efficiency standards will rise to a fleet average of 35.5 mpg in the 2016 model year, compared with 27.3 mpg in 2011.

The emphasis on fuel efficiency includes Cadillac with the ATS compact car, due in the 2013 or 2014 model year.

At Buick, GM will introduce the Verano compact car in the 2012 model year and probably will give the LaCrosse sedan a hybrid to continue the fuel economy theme.

Even the GMC brand, traditionally known for its trucks, will get smaller. A production version of the Granite concept, built on a compact-car platform, is expected to come to market in 2013.

Chevrolet will continue to add smaller vehicles. The Aveo subcompact debuts in mid-2011 with production at Orion Township, Mich. The Spark minicar comes to market in 2012. Even the Impala, whose redesign is timed for the 2014 model year, will get a few inches smaller.

Verona, Encore to join Buick Lineup?

According to an Automotive News report, Buick execs have reportedly decided to call their compact crossover the Encore.

Details are still slim, but the "Baby Enclave" is expected it to make its debut sometime in 2012 as a 2013 model. The Encore will likely pick up many design cues from its Enclave stablemate. Speaking of the Enclave, it is expected to get a refresh and a smaller, 3.0-liter V-6 engine as its main powerplant (replacing the present 3.6-liter unit) for the 2012 model year.

As for the compact sedan, AN's sources say it will be called the Verano, and that it will arrive sometime next year. If you recall, it's expected to be roughly the same Delta II-underpinned model already sold in China as the Excelle and more athletic Excelle GT, with minor design, suspension and powertrain updates for the North American version.

In China, the base Excelle gets a 138-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder, while the Excelle GT a 181-horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Each is mated to a six-speed automatic. We wouldn't be surprised if the Verano gets an updated version of GM's 1.4-liter turbo as an option.

The new Buick's are reportedly aimed at younger, affluent buyers looking for an entry-level luxury vehicle. Buick's average customer age has recently been on the downward slide. Younger consumers will also be able to opt for the higher performance Regal GS and "greener" LaCrosse Hybrid, both of which are rumored to arrive in the 2012 model year.

Buick Introduces the First Television Commercial for the 2011 Regal

Buick is launching the first of several television commercials today as part of its advertising campaign for the 2011 Regal. The campaign launching throughout July uses both unconventional and traditional outlets to introduce Regal to a new consumer audience.

“The first of the Regal television commercials will allow consumers to discover the all-new Regal sports sedan’s German inspired engineering and performance,” said Craig Bierley, Buick advertising director. “The subsequent television spots and the advertising campaign will present the Regal in a range of mediums that will allow consumers the ability to draw their own conclusions on the vehicle.”

The first television spot for the Regal titled “Autobahn” celebrates the Regal’s design, engineering and performance, and features the voice of Kevin Bacon. Future commercials will tell the comprehensive story on the Regal and highlight the vehicle’s engine performance, driving dynamics, driver friendly personal technologies and sculpted interior design. Additional commercials will be released through the remainder of 2010.
